In The Last of Us: Left Behind - Podcast Beyond. The creators specifically state that Ellie was attracted to Riley and that she had romantic feelings for her. It doesn't get much more clearer than that.

There's also this from a recent interview:

“When I was writing it, I was writing it with the idea that Ellie is gay, and when the actresses were working they were definitely working with the idea that they’re both attracted to each other. That was the subtext and intention that they were playing with from the opening cinematic when they’re holding each other’s hands for too long, or when Riley bites her on the neck; there’s that chemistry there from the get go that was important for us so that we earned that moment when they kissed each other. So that it wasn’t just out of the blue but also wasn’t so overt that you’re like “Oh of course. Just get on with it." At the photo booth and the awkward moment there when they almost kiss, the way Riley calls Ellie her ‘girl’, these things could be taken either way but for the most part it's pretty clear.”

    - Neil Druckmann

    • Well, i don't mind what Ellie is, i still love her, anyhow. :)

I accepted who she is, really. But afterall, she's one heck of a girl, throught the main game and the DLC. :)

    • Yeah, seriously. I can't believe that I'm still getting notifications from threads of people in complete denial. I don't see how much clearer ND can be with this... People only see/hear what they want to, I guess. It shouldn't be a big deal, but at the same time, I can see how it can be a big deal for gay gamers who are excited that theres a great, non-stereotypical gay character in a hugely popular game like this (and I can see how people being all "no homo, bro" in the comments might be insulting as well.) So, in that sense it's important, but it shouldn't change the way people feel about Ellie as a person or anything...

    • Yeah, she's either gay or bi. So?

    • I have never ever had a problem with people's choices on their sexuality. Have had no problem with gay or lesbians. I believe everyone is entitled to what their heart tells them. Every one is human. live with it.

    • Are we still arguing and debating about this?

    • How is this even an issue? no one should "deal" with it, we should just accept it. It's a part of who Ellie is as a character.

    • "Ellie is gay, so deal with it"

Interesting title, figuring he goes on and gives us more info and DOESNT deal with it.

Who cares!? Just stop already! Nobody should give two bucket loads of crap about Ellie's sexual preference. It DOESNT make a character better or worse if she is attracted to girls! She's awesome as a person. How about we focus on that? Hmm?

No, instead we go on and on about how "revolutionary it is for there to be a GAY character" or "Ellie is gay". Like, so what!? So the GLAAD puts Bill up for what reason.. can anyone guess?... because he likes men... oh, and he's complex, too. Give me a break.

Seriously, why do we keep rehashing this same topic over and over? Ellie's awesome and she's a companion ANYONE would want in this world! It shouldn't have anything to do with their sexuality, for Petes sake!

Ok, I'm done... revert back to debate mode... beep, beep, beep...

Calm down. This is a very old thread from when LB first came out, and lots of people on here were in complete denial that Ellie even was gay or loved Riley, so that's what the OP is on about- giving a direct quote from Druckman confirming it. If you hate discussing this so much, then stop posting in old threads about it.

    • I don't care if she's gay but given there is absolutely no other hint of sexuality in the story, it seems weird that they felt they needed to inject this but everyone is fascinated by homosexuality these days for some reason.

Possibly because trhe thought of  Ellie and another girl naked, hugging and kissing, is just so god damn SEXY that any excuse to continue to think about it is a good one.

      You fuckin' got that right!

If I had a friend like her growing up I would have known how to be happy, back when things were  wonderful and magical and important.

It doesn't matter that she showed me who I am now. Now is too fucking late.

It's almost better not knowing at all. Then I wouldn't be doubled over in pain from crippling regret for everything I DIDN'T do.

    • Hey guys ever read Talk:Ellie it says:*In Left Behind Ellie kisses Riley, which at first caused much debate on her sexuality; NaughyDog has officially stated that she is Bisexual. So in a way she is gay but not really. i dont know if i should say YAY or not say anything lol.

    • Druckmann has stated, directly, that she's gay.

    • I mean..... I don't care one way or another what she is, but I don't see why a quote from a writer is the end all be all. I could easily pull up a quote from her VA saying "maybe she is, maybe she's not."

Don't know why you're so insecure about it.

You know he was director and writer of the game, right?

The VA of Ellie is only responsible for voicing the lines. Druckmann imagined and wrote up the character in the first place; he has authority over this more than Ashley Johnson in terms of story.

It's not about "insecurity", it's about laying out the facts. You can wave a piece of paper in my face and tell me that it is a ball until the cows come home, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a piece of paper.

Why are YOU so insecure about a plot point that was clarified and cleared up by the director and storyboarders years ago? See? You don't like how childish that sounds? Don't do it to other users on this wiki.

You don't know anything about what Druckmann actually did on the character or what authority he had so cut the holier than thou crap. Actors and voice actors are well known to have plenty of say in who or what their character is. For God sakes, Rick and Morty, South Park, and Family Guy were started by the guys who also happen to voice the vast majority of the characters on their respective shows.

You're "facts" have consisted of a single quote by a guy of whom you have no idea how much control he had. I could just as easily spin up a couple reasons why Ellie may not be gay just from the actual game(who the hell steals a gay porn magazine just for the hell of it?) or Ashley Johnson's quote and have just as much credibility as you.

Considering you've oversaturated this thread with comments striking down any opinion that disagrees with you, the only person that could be viewed as out of line on this wiki is you. You're the one that's getting angsty about this years later. Not me. Grow up for once.

You clearly care; otherwise you wouldn't have necroed a dead topic that has been discussed to death for the umpteenth time. As to why it's important, two reasons. First, declaring Ellie to be straight--or claiming that her sexuality doesn't matter--is a mightily convenient thing to say for one of the only LGBTQ characters. It's LGBTQ erasure in a game chock full of straight characters. Ever notice how literally no one on the planet jumps to their keyboards the moment a character is revealed to be straight with lines like "I think he's actually gay" or "it doesn't matter!!!!111///"? Secondly, I can't find your claim that Naughty Dog "confirmed" that Ellie is bi. The closest I've found is who cares?--from the game director Bruce Straley.

Random fandom user, you don't get to dismiss primary sources. That's now how laying out arguments work. Johnson received instruction from Druckmann on how to portray the character, not the other way round. Just because VAs have opinions on their characters (since they, you know, voice them for years it's kind of inevitable) doesn't make them 100% acceptable sources. In the holy quote from Johnson you keep bringing up, she merely states that "it does not matter" to her; in an ideal world, people wouldn't be fantasizing and freaking out so much about a fictional 14 year old's sexuality. This wiki's visitors have, disappointingly, overwhelmingly demonstrated to the contrary. You people literally will not stop bringing up Ellie's sexuality, regardless of how long the game has been out.

Considering how Druckmann was given full artistic license over how to develop the story, it's actually laughable to call into question whether he had a leadership role in planning said story.

I don't speak for all in the LGBTQ community, but I'm getting sick and tired of the "omg this character might not be gay/is confused/is just going through a phase/totally still fits in my straight fanfic" line of thought. As Straley and Johnson have both stated, it ought not to matter, but people like you insist on continually necroing it.

I'm closing this thread to prevent such necros again; I should have done it years ago. If either of you have anything new to say (please note, new), message me on my wall.
