Blatant Copy and Paste Edit

I'd like to point out that the "Plot" section was literally copy-pasted from the Wikipedia article. I don't have the game, otherwise I would rewrite it myself for originality. Someone might want to fix this.  Shrev64  Talk  Contribs  Master Thief  01:05,6/26/2013

Good call. I don't have the time to rewrite it at the moment, but I put the Wikipedia template on it for the time being. --Klock101 (talk) 01:16, June 26, 2013 (UTC)

"Themes" sectionEdit

Can we get some opinions on the "Themes" section. From what I can see, it's entirely one editor's opinion and is very essay-like, so I don't think it should stay in the article purely because it's unverifiable and falls under the title of original research. It could be better as a blog page. Ideas anyone? --Klock101 (talk) 04:51, July 15, 2013 (UTC)

I agree, although it's well written and obviously a lot of thought was put into it, it's probably better suited as a blog since it's uncited and mainly opinions of one writer. - Karen (talk) * (profile) 20:41, July 15, 2013 (UTC)
Hey peeps, yeah, I did a similiar thing with the Bioshock Infinite page, and another user took it down, so I appreciate that you guys didn't take it down as fast as the other page did. On one hand, I agree that it is entirely my opinion, but I mean, when it comes to interpreting themes, it is always subjective. On the other hand, I think it is very important we gamers bring to light more frequently the themes certain games touch on b/c I think that is how video games are going to earn equal respect with other storytelling mediums. The other BI wiki user suggested I put it in a blog, but I figure more eyes come to this page than my random blog page, y'know? Karen, when you say uncited, would it help if I cite specific instances in the story? Or are you talking that I cannot veritably cite a theme in general? I mean, I guess the way we could make it more objective is if other users bring their interpretations to the table? Although more opinions doesn't equal more objectivity... Hey guys, I guess to prevent any further dispute, I'll copy-paste my section to the IGN wiki of The Last of Us, and hopefully it'll stick. I noticed they had a "Major Themes" section for Bioshock Infinite, so I guess people have been open to that kind of section before. InspectorJavert (talk) 02:07, July 17, 2013 (UTC)
Hey, I'm sorry I didn't notice this earlier - I just meant that Wiki pages are mainly written to include facts and information on the topic, not opinions or interpretations. Wikis are essentially statistical, non-subjective compilations of information, like an encyclopedia.
By "uncited", I meant the latter - I don't think there really is a way to prove beyond a doubt that a theme is correct or incorrect - like you said, interpreting themes are always subjective, which is why it might not be a good idea to have a Themes section on the page. You backed up everything you wrote well with evidence from the game, but there's no way of proving that it is absolutely what ND intended for the player to take from the game.
I hope that clears up what I was trying to say, and I'm glad to see you made a blog for this - your interpretations are thought provoking, and hopefully as a blog it will promote discussion among other users here. - Karen (talk) * (profile) 04:23, July 17, 2013 (UTC)
It's all good. Yeah, that is the purpose of a wiki I guess. Yep, thanks, yeah, I tried to think up of as much evidence as I could for each theme. Yeah it did! Thanks yeah, I hope others are interested in the themes as well, and don't hesitate to drop your two cents on the topic if you get the chance!InspectorJavert (talk) 13:09, July 17, 2013 (UTC)

PlotEdit

I think it's time to discuss rewriting the plot section, as it's largely taken straight from Wikipedia (as the previous post points out).

I looked mainly at the Final Fantasy Wiki and the Mass Effect Wiki for some ideas on how to structure the section (are we allowed to mention we're taking ideas from them?), because both game franchises, like The Last of Us, are plot driven games with a lot to their stories, and this is how all their main game pages are organised, in terms of the plot section -

  • Game's official introduction/official plot summary in the quotation template

Then, subheaders include:

  • Background
  • Major plot points

Example here and here. FFVII's plot description is rather lengthy, while ME's is pretty condensed, as they have a separate page for the plot.

So for the official story part, I went to The Last of Us' website, and I think we can use this if we choose to include that in the beginning of the section:

Joel, a ruthless survivor with few moral lines left to cross, lives in one of the last remaining Quarantine Zones. These walled-off, oppressive cities are run by what’s left of the military. Despite the strict martial law, Joel operates in the black market of the city, smuggling contraband for the right price.
Joel is asked by a dying friend to look after Ellie, a fourteen-year-old girl with courage beyond her years. What starts out as a simple job to deliver Ellie to another Quarantine Zone, soon transforms into a profound journey that will forever change Joel and Ellie.
As they trek across a post-pandemic United States, Joel and Ellie will encounter different factions of survivors that have each found a unique way of dealing with the infected humans, the lack of supplies, and the threat of other survivors.
As Joel and Ellie struggle to persevere, they must learn to trust each other and work together in order to survive the realities of this new world.
At its core, The Last of Us is about the bond that forms between Joel and Ellie – it is the story of love, loyalty, and redemption.
-- Official story description

After the official introduction, it's broken into subheaders, which includes the Background and major plot points.

I was thinking we could do something like that, too:

Background: Briefly describe the pandemic and outbreak, maybe the leadup to the main story, i.e. the events of the prologue.

And as for the other subheaders, I think we should section it off in seasons, as that's how the game splits up the plot anyway. - Karen (talk) * (profile) 20:36, July 15, 2013 (UTC)

It definitely needs a rewrite. I agree with the the layout you suggest, with the official intro, then a Prologue section, then the seasons, and finally an Epilogue section for the ending. The plot description is really well done on the Final Fantasy wiki, so I don't see any harm in following a structure like theirs. --Klock101 (talk) 16:38, July 16, 2013 (UTC)
