The Shotgun is a long gun that appears in The Last of Us and its multiplayer portion, Factions MP. The ability to use it as a melee weapon is present in the game, but it can only be done when not wielding another melee weapon and only works once.
The Shotgun is first given to Joel by Bill during the chapter "Bill's Town", during the quest to find the crashed military truck at the high school. After reaching Bill's cellar, Bill gives Joel a shotgun and takes one as well, and uses it as his primary weapon for the rest of the chapter.
The Shotgun is a very powerful weapon in multiplayer, even able to break body armor in one direct hit and down a player if unarmored, provided that it is used at close range. At point blank and near-point blank ranges, the shotgun can even down an armored opponent in just one hit. The shotgun is much more powerful per shot than the other buckshot options: the Shorty, Tactical Shotgun, and the Double Barrel. However, it is much more expensive to equip and purchase ammo for. Despite the fact that it is pump-action, it still has a fast fire rate that beats out the other buckshot weapons. Arguably, only the Burst Rifle and the Flamethrower can compete with the shotgun at close range.
The shotgun is capable of achieving headshots; and the extra parts rewarded for achieving them); however, there is no additional damage given for headshots so no practical reason to aim for the head over center mass considering the high spread of the shotgun pellets being fired.
The downside of the shotgun when compared to its other close range options is that it is very expensive to buy ammunition for. Even if every shell downs an enemy, it still costs much more parts than one would gain with completely efficient use. It is also relatively ineffective outside of close range, limiting its versatility. It also now costs four load out points to equip, making it the most expensive of all the purchaseable weapons. It initially cost three load out points, but this led to many players only using this purchase-able weapon. This resulted in other three point costing purchase-ables, like the Assault Rifle, to rarely be used. One might consider using the Specter instead as it is also a good close range killer, slightly cheaper as well, effectively a guaranteed kill due to its high fire rate, although it is easier to waste ammunition.
The Shotgun costs 400 parts to purchase, and starts off with 2 rounds. A shotgun can hold six rounds in its tubular magazine. 2 more rounds can be purchased for 480 parts, and the price increases with every purchase.

- The Shotgun is based on the pump-action Mossberg 500AT, which fires 12-Gauge cartridges in the game. However, this shotgun can also be chambered in .20-Gauge and .410-Bore.
- A shotgun with the stock removed was seen in some promotional artwork, but it is not present in the game.
- In Factions multiplayer, the Shotgun has the second highest damage output and is the most mobile out of all the weapons, after the Military Sniper.
- In the singleplayer campaign, it is the only other weapon, along with the 9mm Pistol, that is automatically acquired through normal gameplay progression. All other weapons used by Joel need to be picked up from killed enemies or at predetermined locations, and as such, can be missed.
