The pump shotgun, also known simply as the shotgun, is a long gun in The Last of Us[1] and The Last of Us Part II[2] and a purchasable in Factions MP.[3]

Overview[]

The shotgun is a very powerful short- to mid-range pump-action shotgun. It can usually kill human enemies and infected with a single shot in close-quarters, however, the range on the shotgun is poor and damage drops the further away the user is from their target. It requires little aiming inside this range due to the wide firing spread, which is capable of killing several enemies in one shot.[4] The powerful blast of the shotgun can also dismember enemies. A con of the shotgun is its slow reloading speed, as the user has to load each shell into the loading port. The shotgun requires 12-gauge shells, which can be found on the bodies of dead enemies or by scavenging the environment, such as safes or shiv doors.

History[]

The Last of Us[]

The shotgun is first given to Joel by Bill during the chapter "Bill's Town", during the quest to find the crashed military truck at Lincoln High School, and is equipped to the long gun holster. After reaching Bill's hideout in the cellar of his church, Bill gives Joel a shotgun and takes one as well, and uses it as his primary weapon for the rest of the chapter. Frank also stole two shotguns from Bill during his attempt to flee Lincoln and put them in a duffel bag, in which Joel can pick up shells from.[1]

It can hold a base amount of four shells in its magazine, but can be upgraded at a workbench to hold up to a total of eight. Reload speed, fire rate, recoil, and range are other available upgrades. The shotgun's stock and forend sport wooden furniture while the barrel and receiver are made of a metal material. The stock can be used to hit an enemy if Joel is holding his shotgun and goes to melee an enemy, however, he only swings it once before he switches back to his fists.

The shotgun is also used by hunters in Pittsburgh,[5] as well as bandits in Jackson County during their attack on the power plant and the ranch house.[6] Cannibals during the chapter "Lakeside Resort" use the shotgun, in which Ellie can pick up if she kills one of them. However, she soon loses it when David recaptures her at Bear Creek Lodge. The cannibals also use them against Joel as he travels through Silver Lake.[7] Members of the Fireflies stationed at Saint Mary's Hospital also use it against Joel during his attempt to save Ellie.[8]

Factions MP[]

A close range bruiser that downs enemies in one shot up close.
―Loadout description.

The shotgun is a powerful weapon in Factions MP, being much more powerful per shot than the other buckshot options: the shorty, tactical shotgun, and the double barrel. It has the second highest damage output and is the most mobile out of all the weapons, after the military sniper. It is capable of breaking body armor in one direct hit and downing a player if unarmored when used in close range. At point blank and near-point blank ranges, the shotgun can down armored opponents in a single hit. Despite the fact that it is pump-action, the shotgun also boasts a fast fire rate that beats out all the other buckshot weapons. Arguably, only the burst rifle and the flamethrower can compete with the shotgun at close range.

The shotgun is capable of achieving headshots, resulting in extra parts being rewarded for them. However, there is no additional damage given for headshots, which makes aiming for the head unnecessary in most scenarios.

One major downside of the shotgun when compared to its other close range options is cost; It is one of the most expensive weapons in the game. Costing four loadout points and 400 parts, it is a significant investment to equip one. Ammunition for it is also expensive as the initial price for two rounds is 480 parts. Aside from its cost, it also has relatively limited ranged capabilities, thus relegating its use to close quarters combat.

Because of these issues, one might consider using the specter instead, as it is slightly cheaper than the Shotgun and is still effective in close quarters thanks to its high fire rate and stealth capabilities. The Double Barrel also serves as a good alternative to the Shotgun as it is cheaper and downs enemies in two shots.

The Last of Us Part II[]

Close-range shotgun with high damage and slow reload speed.
―Workbench description.

The shotgun makes a reappearance in The Last of Us Part II, now known as the "pump shotgun". It is first found by Ellie during the chapter "Seattle Day 1" as she explores downtown Seattle with Dina, where she can pick it up off the corpse of someone who committed suicide with it inside the vault of Westlake Bank.[2] It is equipped to the long gun holster.

The pump shotgun is officially known as Model 924 and was manufactured by Westcott 6. Visually, it bears a resemblance to its previous iteration from the first game with the exception of a sawed-off wooden stock. It can hold a base amount of four shells in its magazine, but its magazine tube can be extended at a workbench, allowing it to hold a total of six. The springs and extractor can be replaced to increase the fire rate. Recoil and weapon sway can be reduced by replacing the wooden handle and forend with a better grip.

It is notably used by Ellie during her fight against Abby Anderson at the Pinnacle Theater.[9] A full-size version that includes the stock is used by Joel to combat a bloater with Ellie in a hotel basement while patrolling the outskirts of Jackson.[10] A similar model is also used by the Rattlers in Santa Barbara.[11] Manny Alvarez carries a model with a stock attached and the barrel sawed off as he helps Abby sneak out of the WLF base to search for Owen Moore at the aquarium.[12]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The Naughty Dog developers have based the shotgun in The Last of Us and Factions MP on the pump-action Mossberg 500AT, which fires 12-gauge cartridges in the game. However, this shotgun can also be chambered in 20-gauge and .410-Bore. The pump shotgun in The Last of Us Part II is based off of the Remington 870, as evident by the lack of a thumb safety on the rear of the receiver.[citation needed]
  • In The Last of Us, the shotgun is the only other weapon, along with the 9mm pistol, that is automatically acquired through normal gameplay progression in the single-player. All other weapons used by Joel need to be picked up from killed enemies or at predetermined locations, and as such, can be missed.
  • In The Last of Us Part I, most enemies have sawed-off pump shotguns. Fireflies at the end of the game use the "rubber tactical" full-length variant.
